Can I Afford a Coach?

Dear Rain,

I have been looking at hiring a life coach for quite awhile, but the problem is I can’t find one I connect with and can afford.  I have been struggling with the goals in my life and know I need to find help, what can I do?

Dear Reader,

Thank you for your question.  Having lived through years of not having enough to buy diapers, I do know what it is like to want something and feel hopeless in being able to attain it.

I remember paying for my first month of coaching and thinking, am I crazy?  I can’t afford this kind of luxury.  If that was true, why did I pay?  Because I had tried the best I could on my own, and it wasn’t working for me.  I decided that I would rather spend every last penny on hope, than have a few hundred in the bank without it.  When I made the commitment, strangely enough, everything began to change.  It was that money exchange that changed my life.

There are two possible truths here:

1. You believe you can’t afford it, but you can.

2. You have no money, and cannot afford it.

For most people in this country, number 1 is the truth.  They absolutely can afford some form of help.  Whether it is through a sliding scale, having fewer sessions, or finding a creative solution, there is a way to pay for the help you need.  However, it may mean giving up something else.  It may mean you must budget.  Most of the time with women, it means you must see your own worth.  What we would be willing to spend on gymnastics for our kids, we are not willing to spend on ourselves.

They deserve it, not us.

What is your daughter going to benefit more from - stretches and jumps or a happy and powerful mom?  It is also important to know, coaching isn’t forever, unless you want it to be.  Personally, I love having a coach.   I understand the benefit of moving forward and co-creating with someone else.  However, I also find somewhere between 3 months to a year, many clients are ready to take a break or fly on their own.  It is a small investment to change your life.

I am so grateful I took that step.  My clients tell me the same thing. What will it take for you to see where you can afford to move forward?

For some others, the truth is they really cannot afford a coach because they don’t have enough money to pay the rent.  Here is a secret I want to share.  If you want a coach and you make it your mission to have a coach, you will find a coach.  Here are some steps you can take to put your life back on track:

1. Grab a piece of paper and write down every skill you have.  Things like computer savvy, fast typer, neat freak, loves kids, loves to cook, are all valid skills.

2. Out of your list of things you can do, put a star by each one you enjoy doing.

3.  Those with a star by them are your tradable, billable and energy exchanges.  Take time to write a brag about your skills and write an ad for each one.

For instance, if you love Facebook to chat with your friends and you understand how it works, get on Twitter and Facebook and advertise yourself.   Your brag might read: Facebook expert for hire to help you make sense of social networking.  Also looking for coaching trade.  Do that once a day, I am sure by the end of the week, you will have coaches contacting you.

Or, if you love to keep tidy, help others by becoming an organizer or housecleaner.  Your brag might read: Neat freak looking for an outlet.  I can help you make sense of your clutter!  Put up flyers in your neighborhood first, (PS: eco-friendly cleaners can charge more!) and then look up coaches in your neighborhood and ask to trade.  I know most will love the cleaning help!

If you already have a busy schedule and have more than one job, and you are not making ends meet, here is a do-it-yourself coaching program:

  • Pick up Life Makeovers by Cheryl Richardson at your local library.  This is a step by step guide by an amazing coach who can tell you how to live a life you will love.
  • Make a journal, and begin keeping track of your daily journey on paper.   Accountability is a main key to coaching.  You will have to be in charge of being accountable for you.
  • You will also want to be inspired.  Sign up for my free Inspired Almost-Daily newsletter and listen to inspirational podcasts.  Keep your mind in the right place by listening to others who are where you want to be.

Whether you work to create money or trade energy to hire a coach, or you begin to do-it-yourself, taking the step to begin creating your authentic journey is work.  Don’t be fooled to believe this kind of transformation comes easily.  You must commit to the work.  You will have to create energy to start your journey.  You have to exchange energy to make it through successfully, as no one can do it alone.

So the question now is, what are you going to do next to create the energy to take your first step?

smiles and inspiration!
