When is the Right Time for a New Career?

Dear Rain,

I'm thinking of making a transition from teaching to another job within the next 10 years (retire from teaching at 15-20 years and do something that would use my coaching skills, yet give me health benefits). How do I know when it's the right time?

Dear Reader,

Ah, the ethereal question, “When is the right time?” Many gurus have spent many moons on the mountain to answer this question.

First let’s check in with your inspiration level. What is your Wow Factor for this new job? The Wow Factor is a great tool to help you make positive decisions, as it connects you to your spirit’s energy and inspiration. Here’s how it works: On a scale of 1 – 10 (when 1 represents: “Please don’t make me do it!” and 10 represents: “I can’t believe it! This is my DREAM come true!”) how excited you are about this new career?

If you are at a 10, then start now by taking action! If you are at an 8 or 9, you might still choose to move forward. Warning! The energy you need to continue to move towards your goals during difficult challenges may not be available if you move on a dream with a Wow Factor of 8 or 9! Starting with a Wow Factor of 10 is going to give you the high energy you want to create greater success. If you are anywhere under 8, I would ask you, “What else would you love to do that would give you a Wow Factor of 10?” Open your mind and dream big until you hit a 10. Having this kind of excitement in your life will help you make positive choices towards living in your bliss. Are you at a 10 yet? Great, keep reading!

Now, let’s look at your time frame. You have given yourself a large window of up to 10 years to receive your retirement health benefits. With this amazing amount of time, you can really create a phenomenal business foundation! Let’s start with the now! Spend a few hours this week to take 1 or 2 actions towards your goal. Actions might include reading a book, writing down inspired ideas, taking a class, volunteering or meeting with other professionals in the fields that interest you. Continue this practice every week. This will give you the opportunity to learn vast amounts while you try this new career on for size.

Another gift that your time gives you is a larger Dream Fund. A Dream Fund is a separate bank account that is created for the next dream on your life list. I recommend you save between 2-10% of your income into your dream fund. Over time, this fund will give you the freedom to take bigger risks, create a bigger presence, and be prepared for slower times without stress.

Within the next decade, you will have collected more financial savings, information and experience which will create greater success when you are ready to take the leap!

smiles and inspiration!
